Nostalgia, the road

Nostalgia, the road

Joaquín Maito

For some time now, we have been receiving visits from space that leave almost no trace. There are only clumsy and ephemeral homemade records that arouse all kinds of conspiracies. While science fiction films construct an imaginary of aliens with an air of intergalactic conquest, “Nostalgia, the road” is developed as a science fiction essay that tries to imagine, with the tools of non-fiction cinema, what the world looks like from the perspective of an alien. Thinking a genre denied to independent cinema and to the South of the planet, to invent a Latin American and anti-capitalist science fiction story.

Two aliens, the last survivors of a nearly extinct world, meet on Earth. One is traveling the universe in search of a new home. The other, younger and inexperienced, is leaving his planet for the first time. The meeting point is south of the continent, in a salt desert. Each one lands in a different place, the more experienced one knows the area, he has been to this world many times. He goes from museums to industry, analyzes the planet, remembers stories of the past and tries to guide the young explorer. The other, looking at everything for the first time, learns to observe and listen to this unknown world. Along the way, he encounters oceans and lakes, wind and earth, plastic bags, plants, bright lights, a forest on fire, a very curious dog, gas stations, humans and their inventions, ecocide and resistance. Everything he encounters generates questions and experiences that he shares with the most experienced alien. As this road movie progresses, we learn more about the fate of his world, which at times reminds us of our own. But before society collapses, victim of capitalist greed, the question arises: Is this dystopian destiny written, or can we still do something to change it?
